GATELESS WRITING SALONS & RETREATS
Gateless-style writing circles and retreats are for folks who want to write more, better: to improve their writing, learn how to pitch, and flex their creativity—all without criticism or questioning the work.
Sometimes, you just need a little nudge to get writing again.
Writing at home can be a bore—or worse, feel like a chore. The more you do it, the less “special” it starts to feel.
Whether you’re working on something “big,” like a book, or just don’t feel the same spark you used to, it can help to get away from your usual surroundings to reignite the excitement you’ve lost.
Gateless-style writing salons and writing retreats are the fastest, most impactful way to get back to the page feeling inspired. Something magical happens when you spend time with other writers, share your work, and get and receive feedback.
These writing salons and retreats are designed to inspire you and give you a new perspective on your writing.
WHAT IS GATELESS WRITING?
The Gateless Method is a unique somatic prompted writing process that focuses on quieting the inner critic and celebrating where a piece of writing is strongest and most alive.
In a Gateless writing salon, writers who read their work receive feedback from the listeners—but only positive feedback. We focus on genius: Instead of looking for what’s wrong, we identify where the writing is most powerful.
Science backs up our approach: Negative critiques can trigger the brain’s amygdala, the "fight or flight" center. The brain perceives that as a social threat, which shuts down the prefrontal cortex—the area responsible for complex thought, language, and creativity.
By focusing on the strength of the work and what we, as listeners, loved, we help encourage the writer’s brain to repeat the “successful” creative behavior and "map" their unique voice.
When we give feedback, we follow strict rules:
Writers do not disclaim their work in any way. Origins and explanations are irrelevant and only invite the inner critic, so we avoid them.
We treat all work as fictional, even if it seems or sounds true.
We refer to “the narrator” or “the writer” instead of “you” to preserve a feeling of safety between the feedback and the writer.
We don’t bring ourselves into the writing—there are no personal stories woven into feedback. We focus only on what is on the page.
We focus all feedback on what we love, what’s working, and what is strong in the work. We are a mirror for the writer.
Once you go Gateless, you’ll never want to go back.
