Whether you call yourself a “professional writer” or not, figuring out where to pitch your ideas or submit your work can be like trying to find a specific tree in a rainforest.

Getting an editor to say “yes” to a pitch is a process. And deciding where to submit a finished piece takes a lot of research.
First, you have to know the publication. Then, you need to know what the publication expects in pitches and submissions. Then, you have to know where to send your email or submit your work.
And, most importantly, you need to know whether or not you should follow up. (Editors are busy, but they’re not inbox swamp monsters.)
Pitches and literary submissions are not one-size-fits-all processes. Not at all. But they are a numbers game. So if you don’t get the gig at one place, you absolutely should try with another.
Making a solid pitch and submission plan is essential to selling your idea (yes, you’re selling it!) and earning a byline.
