I’m a writing and pitch coach, freelance writer, and content strategist. I learned the basics of writing and editing for the internet all the way back in 2015.
I started pitching to publications in 2022, and landed my first byline with Business Insider. Since then, I’ve also been published by Fast Company, The Guardian, She Owns It, and—my biggest accomplishment to date—on the front page of The New York Times.

In fact, not being a “professional” writer could potentially work in your favor, depending on where you're hoping to submit your story.
Your editor or host is an expert. They’re always willing to help—it’s in their best interest to make sure your content is on-point. 😉

Everyone has to start somewhere. The key is to just start.
The more you pitch, the more likely you'll be to get your first acceptance. And once you get a “yes,” you'll pick up even more steam.

Having a blog or a website can be helpful, but it's definitely not necessary.
It will certainly appeal to editors and media hosts if you have some content somewhere in their specific format (i.e. written, or via audio or video) on the internet that you can use as a “portfolio” of sorts.
That said, your social media profiles work just as well when you’re starting out.

In fact, it's often the other way around – if your pitch gets accepted, the publication may pay you!
There are literary magazines, journals, contests, and “expert” magazine writing opportunities out there that require writers to pay to submit. But for a personal story or journalism pitches, you don't need to pay a dime.ption

The Byline Blueprint covers only English-specific media opportunities, but the general process will be the same in any language.
If you plan to pitch in a different language, you can use everything you learn here to land bylines and guest spots.
